Two activists are engaged to marry – after they met at protests against institutional racism in Ferguson, Missouri.

The town of Ferguson has seen an extended period of unrest since August, after the fatal shooting of Michael Brown by then-police officer Darren Wilson.

However, romance began to bloom between two of the founders of Millennial Activists United – one of the groups that has been protesting in the town – and the pair recently got engaged.

Alexis Templeton, 20, proposed to Brittany Ferrell, 25 this week, on the steps of St Louis City Hall, while surrounded by fellow activists.

The pair then obtained a marriage license – and plan to hold their wedding in the next 30 days.

According to the St Louis American, Templeton told the crowd: “She’d made me happy for 130 days, and I want to make her happy for the rest of her life.”

Explaining how the pair met, Templeton’s sister Bre said: “Alex came up and sat with my son and she fed him.

“She was like, ‘Dude, I got a crush.’ I was like, ‘OK, that’s cool.’ And she was like, ‘No, I got a crush on a girl.’

“I asked her how she felt about it and she said good. I asked her if she wanted to talk about it and she said no.”

Most of Missouri including Ferguson maintains a ban on same-sex marriage, but weddings are legal in St Louis County, after a court ruling last month.
